Description

Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time one-year position of Visiting Instructor and Band Director in the Department of Music to begin August 15, 2025.

Applicants must have current authorization to work in the United States. Gustavus will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position. Gustavus is not an e-verify institution.

Prerequisites

What's required:

  • MA, MM, or MME with a focus in Instrumental Conducting (DMA preferred)
  • Demonstrated commitment and effectiveness as a teacher of students of varying levels and backgrounds, and in fostering development and creative talent in young artists
  • A commitment to student success, their health and wellbeing
  • Expertise in a broad range of musical genres and styles, with demonstrated experience developing culturally inclusive curricula and diverse programming
  • Experience conducting a professional and/or collegiate wind band

  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate students
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting all students, regardless of background
  • At least 3 years professional and/or collegiate wind band conducting experience


Things you will do:

  • Teach 5 course sections over the academic year. The primary teaching responsibilities include one section of MUS-140 Gustavus Wind Orchestra (Touring Band) in both the fall and spring semesters, one section of MUS-141 Gustavus Wind Symphony each semester, and one fall section of MUS-346 Advanced Conducting.
  • Other duties include hosting the Bjorling Music Festival - Honor Band Days in November of 2025 and leading the Gustavus Wind Orchestra on a Midwest tour during Spring Break of 2026.
  • Help cultivate a welcoming community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We strive to foster an environment where people can be themselves, build community, learn, and grow.

  • Improve your teaching by joining a teaching circle, participating in workshops, applying for an internal teaching development grant, and engaging in conversations about teaching with colleagues across campus.
  • Develop professional skills by participating in faculty meetings and committees, attending faculty development days, and taking advantage of the College's membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).

Based on data from AAUP (American Association of University Professors) and CUPA (College and University Professional Association), we offer a competitive starting salary range of $45,050 to $51,000 for a 9-month academic year. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience, training, certifications/licensure, market factors, departmental budgets, and responsibility.
