HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Pharmacoepidemiology who will be responsible for conducting mentored research, focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on deriving real-world evidence on the potential safety and effectiveness of repurposed medications to treat addiction, including alcohol use disorder. 

 

The Fellow will join a multi-site, multidisciplinary research team, and be mentored by Dr Joshua Gray, PhD , and Dr Christopher Rentsch, PhD .

 

The Fellow will be encouraged to articulate research questions of clinical, population health, and mechanistic importance, design research projects, develop detailed analytic plans, perform analyses, interpret results, effectively communicate results orally and in writing, lead and submit results for peer-reviewed publication, and disseminate findings at national and international conferences. 

 

The Fellow will have the opportunity to work with multiple sources of electronic health records and other routinely-collected data, including the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS)-National, Million Veterans Program (MVP), All of Us, UK Biobank, and others.

 

Our lab prioritizes mentorship and professional growth . There will be ample training opportunities including in grant writing and attendance of workshops or short courses to refine or extend skills. 

 

This position will be in support of the Clinical Neuroscience of Psychopathology (CNP) lab in the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, . This research includes collaborations with principal investigators from Yale School of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania, and the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The ideal candidate will have strong computational and analytic skills with some experience using electronic health record data and a passion for deriving high-quality real-world evidence, ideally in the field of addiction.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and assist in designing, conducting, and interpreting pharmacoepidemiologic research; includes extracting and cleaning very large sources of electronic health records and other routinely-collected data.
  • Lead and assist with the preparation of abstracts and presentations at national and international scientific meetings and manuscripts for publication, including as lead author.
  • Manage elements of larger grants, ensuring compliance with good practice in relation to the conduct of research, and institutional ethics policies.
  • Undertake high quality research and scholarship, including contributing to drafting major grant proposals and/or leading on drafting smaller grant proposals.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisors, including, but not limited to, travel and attendance of and participation in training and data access activities required for this role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience analyzing large-scale health datasets, including those derived from electronic health records or other routinely-collected data.
  • Previous contributions to written output, preferably peer-reviewed.
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a research team, and proven ability to meet research deadlines.
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Evidence of good organizational skills, including effective time management.
  • Experience of conducting epidemiological analysis in SAS or other statistical software packages.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Some experience of contributing to research grant applications.
  • Some experience using propensity score approaches, including propensity score matching and/or inverse probability of treatment weighting.
  • Some knowledge of addiction treatment.
  • A strong interest and willingness to learn these preferred skills will be reviewed favorably.

Work Environment:

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting. 

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree.
  • Minimum of 0-5 years experience required.

Compensation:

  • The likely salary range for this position is $47,600 USD to $65,000 USD annually based on a 40-hour work week.
  • This is not, however, a guarantee of compensations or salary.
  • Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.
